The Alchemy of Master's Thesis Writing

When beginning a master's thesis, students may face difficulties in choosing a topic. There is an overwhelming amount of literature to read, books and articles alike, as well as research seminars to attend, increasingly complex seminar papers to write, and data to collect. Life outside of studies, such as other coursework, work obligations, health, mental well-being, family, and relationships, can also have a significant impact on the thesis process. It is therefore no surprise that a thesis can sometimes stretch into a marathon lasting several years, even though many of these problems can be avoided in various ways. How can we respond to these challenges and produce a high-quality master's thesis?

As authors, our aim is to promote a clear overall understanding of how to write an excellent thesis effectively, both in theory and in practice. This pedagogical guide article brings together the key questions related to the thesis process in a pragmatic package, taking into account the critical factors that influence thesis quality.

The article is intended for students beginning their thesis work, thesis supervisors, and those leading thesis seminars, serving as an "introductory article" to the topic. It summarizes the initial choices involved in starting a thesis, the construction of the theoretical framework, and useful practices, while also highlighting common problem areas. This article does not replace general scientific research or guide literature on thesis writing; rather, it serves as an opening for planning the thesis process.
